TRICONEX 2101

Triple Modular Redundant (TMR) Main Processor Module

Official Specification & User Manual (English)

1. General Description

The TRICONEX 2101 is a Triple Modular Redundant (TMR) Main Processor Module (MP) for the Triconex Trident Safety Instrumented System (SIS). It is designed for SIL 3 safety-critical applications in oil & gas, petrochemical, power, and process industries, providing fault-tolerant control, safety logic execution, and system-level diagnostics.
The module executes user safety application logic, performs triple-voted data processing, and manages all system communication and I/O coordination. Single-point hardware failures do not interrupt operation, delivering 99.999% system availability.

2. Part Number & Type

  • Model: 2101

  • Type: Main Processor Module (MP), TMR

  • Series: Trident (Triconex / Schneider Electric)

  • Safety Level: SIL 3 (IEC 61508)

  • Approvals: TÜV Rheinland, FM, CSA

3. Key Features

  • Triple Modular Redundancy (TMR)

Three independent 32-bit processors operate in parallel; all data and logic results are hardware-voted to eliminate single-point faults.

  • High Performance

33 MHz CPU, 1 MB RAM / 4 MB Flash for user logic and data storage.

  • Fault Tolerance & Diagnostics

Comprehensive built-in self-test (BIST), continuous fault detection, and event logging (SOE ≤ 40 ms resolution).

  • Redundant Communication

Dual Ethernet ports (TriNet / EtherNet/IP), serial ports, and support for Modbus RTU/TCP.

  • Hot-Swappable

Module can be replaced online without system shutdown.

  • Wide Operating Range

    -40°C to +70°C, industrial shock/vibration resistance.

  • Protection Class: IP67

  • Vibration: 5–200 Hz, 1g

  • Humidity: 5%–95% non-condensing

4.5 Power

  • Input: 90–264 VAC, 50/60 Hz

  • Redundant power supply, automatic switchover

4.6 Physical

  • Dimensions: 250 × 150 × 75 mm

  • Weight: ~1.5 kg

  • Mounting: Trident baseplate, 19” rack compatible

5. Functional Overview

  • Logic Execution

Runs safety application programs created in TriStation 1131 (IEC 61131-3).

  • I/O Data Processing

Reads/votes digital/analog inputs; computes and votes outputs to field devices.

  • System Management

Controls system mode (Run/Program/Remote), diagnostics, and fault reporting.

  • Communication

Exchanges data with HMI, DCS, and other Trident nodes via redundant networks.

  • SOE & Diagnostics

Records time-stamped events and faults for troubleshooting and compliance.

6. System Architecture

The Trident system uses three 2101 MP modules installed on a common baseplate, forming a 2oo3 TMR controller. All I/O modules are also triple-channel and voted at the backplane. Communication modules (CM) provide redundant network interfaces between MPs and external systems.

7. Installation & Configuration

  1. Insert the 2101 module into an available Trident baseplate slot.

  2. Connect redundant AC power to the system.

  3. Connect Ethernet and serial cables as required.

  4. Use TriStation 1131 to:

    • Set node address and IP configuration

    • Download user safety logic

    • Enable diagnostics and SOE logging

  5. Verify MP status LEDs: PWR (green), RUN (green), FAULT (red).

8. LED Indicators

  • PWR: Green = power OK

  • RUN: Green = executing user logic

  • FAULT: Red = hardware/software fault

  • COM: Green = network activity

9. Safety Application

  • Emergency Shutdown (ESD)

  • Burner Management Systems (BMS)

  • High-integrity pressure protection (HIPPS)

  • Turbine/boiler safety control

  • Process safety interlocks

10. Maintenance

  • Hot-swap faulty 2101 without shutdown

  • Update firmware via TriStation 1131

  • Inspect power supply and communication cables periodically

  • Review SOE logs for fault trends

11. Ordering Information

  • Model: 2101

  • Description: Triconex Trident TMR Main Processor Module

  • Compatible with: Trident Chassis, I/O Modules, TriStation 1131
