I. Product Overview

XYCOM 70600‑001 (XVME‑600) is a 6U single-slot VME bus embedded CPU module launched by XYCOM (now part of Artisan Technology Group), designed specifically for industrial real-time control, data acquisition, and embedded applications in harsh environments. As the core master control board in the VMEbus system, it is equipped with a Motorola 68020 16MHz processor, integrating memory, serial ports, parallel ports, storage interfaces, and real-time clock. It is compatible with VMEbus master/slave mode and can operate independently or as a node in a multi-processor system, making it a mainstream CPU board for industrial VME control systems.

II. Hardware Architecture and Mechanical Characteristics

Form Factor: Standard 6U single-width VMEbus size (165.1 mm × 200.02 mm), compliant with IEEE 1014 specifications, occupying a single slot, compatible with all standard VME enclosures and backplanes, compact and easy to install.

PCB and Structure: Industrial-grade multi-layer reinforced PCB, with 68020 CPU, memory array, EPROM/Flash, VME bus interface, I/O controller, power management, watchdog circuit, EMI filter components; enhanced anti-vibration and anti-shock design, suitable for industrial site mechanical stress and wide temperature conditions.

Connectors: Front panel integrates DB9 serial ports ×2, DB25 parallel ports, keyboard interface, reset button, LED status indicator lights; backplane realizes bus communication and expansion I/O through VME P1/P2 connectors, with well-organized wiring and good shielding.

Status Indicators: On-board power, operation, fault, watchdog LED indicators, supporting power-on self-test (POST) and real-time monitoring of operation status, facilitating rapid on-site diagnosis and maintenance.

III. Core Processor and Memory Configuration

Main Processor: Motorola 68020, operating frequency 16MHz, 32-bit architecture, integrated memory management unit (MMU), supports virtual memory and multi-task operating system, with superior performance compared to 68000 series, suitable for complex real-time control logic.

Memory:

DRAM: On-board **1MB (expandable to 4MB)** high-speed DRAM, supports zero wait access, ensuring program operation and data cache efficiency.

EPROM/Flash: Standard 512KB EPROM (optional Flash), used for storing system firmware, boot programs, and user applications, supports on-site firmware upgrade.

No L2 cache, basic configuration is simple and reliable, suitable for industrial real-time and stability priority scenarios.

IV. VME Bus Interface and System Expansion

Bus Standards: Compatible with VMEbus A16/A24/A32 addressing, D08/D16/D32 data transmission, supports master/slave mode, bus arbitration, interrupts (levels 1–7), and DMA transmission, suitable for complex systems with multi-board card collaboration.

Address Space: Supports 2GB A32 address range, accessible to all VME bus slave devices, compatible with XVME‑500/530/560/590 series I/O modules, with strong expansion capability. Bus Function: Integrated system clock (SYSCLK), system reset (SYSRESET), single-level arbitrator, bus timer and IACK ring drive, meeting the complete VME system management requirements.

V. I/O Interface and Peripheral Support

Serial Port: 2 RS-232/422 (DB9), supporting baud rates from 50 to 115.2 kbps, suitable for serial communication with serial devices, sensors, and human-machine interface (HMI).

Parallel Port: 1 bidirectional Centronics compatible parallel port (DB25), supporting connection of parallel devices such as printers and data acquisition units.

Storage Interface: Supports external floppy drives and IDE hard disks, enabling local storage expansion for data recording, program backup, and system expansion.

Keyboard Interface: AT-style keyboard header, supporting direct connection of industrial keyboards, facilitating on-site debugging and operation.

Real-time Clock (RTC): Battery-backed RTC, maintaining time and date in case of power loss, ensuring system time synchronization and event recording accuracy.

Storage Temperature: -40 ℃ to + 85 ℃, reliable for long-term storage.

Humidity: 5%–95% RH (no condensation), tolerant to humid and dusty conditions.

Vibration / Shock: 5–2000 Hz, 0.015" displacement, excellent anti-vibration and anti-shock capability, suitable for high mechanical stress scenarios.

Electromagnetic Compatibility: Compliant with IEC 61000‑6‑2/4 industrial EMC standards, strong anti-static, anti-pulse group, and anti-surge capabilities, suitable for strong electromagnetic interference environments.

Real-time Operating System Compatibility: Supports MS-DOS, VxWorks, QNX, and custom RTOS, adapting to different real-time and development requirements.

Watchdog Timer (WDT): Hardware WDT, programmable timeout time, automatically resets in case of system anomalies, ensuring long-term operational stability.

Power-On Self-Test (POST): Automatically executes hardware detection upon startup, displays detection results through LED indicator lights, facilitating rapid identification of hardware faults.

Interrupts and DMA: Supports VMEbus interrupts and DMA for high-speed data transmission, enhancing I/O response speed and system throughput.
